MANILA – University of the East Red Warriors turned to Alvin Pasaol in the fourth to score 73-64 over University of the Philippines Maroons in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball at the San Juan Arena.

Holding to a slim 48-47 lead, Pasaol opened the final quarter on Sunday night with 6 straight points – a 3-pointer and three free throws – to increase Red Warriors’ lead to 55-49.

Maroons managed to trim the deficit to 4 but Red Warriors regained its shooting touch on triples by Mark Maloles and Pasaol for a 68-58 lead with over two minutes left.

Pasaol finished with double-double 32 points and 13 rebounds while Mark Olayon added 11 markers for UE, which won three of its last four games to improve to a 3-7 win-loss card.

National University Bulldogs also kept its final four hopes alive after ending a two-game losing skid with a 91-83 victory and held the still winless University of Santo Tomas Tigers at bay.

Bulldogs, which played without suspended mentor Michael Jay Jarin, survived several runs by Tigers before a game-clinching run behind Issa Gaye and Matt Salem to build a 90-81 lead in the last two minutes.

“Thank you sa mga players ko. May instruction kami pero sila pa rin ang maglalaro para sa amin,” said Bulldogs assistant coach Danilo Ildefonso, who took over the coaching chores from Jarin.

Gaye and Salem top-scored with 22 points apiece, while Rodolfo Alejandro and Nico Abatayo had 10 markers each for Bulldogs, which improved to 4-6. Tigers, meanwhile, sank further to 0-10./PN
