MANILA – University of the East Red Warriors barged into the win column of the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball in style after a 90-65 upset over playoff contender Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Alvin Pasaol kept his effectiveness despite coming off the bench as he delivered 25 points and nine rebounds for the Red Warriors, which halted their four-game skid (1-4).
Pasaol also got his much-needed support from teammates Jayson Varilla, who converted five triples to finish with 17 points, and Philip Manalang, who made double-double 13 points and 12 assists.
“Well at least the monkey is off my back as a coach. Ganito pala iyong feeling manalo sa college. Sobrang blessed and it’s a relief,” said Red Warriors rookie head coach Joe Silva. “I just told them to work hard and the results will follow.”
Holding to a slim 20-16 advantage after the first 10 minutes, the Red Warriors began their run in the second period with Pasaol unloading 12 markers for a 43-31 halftime edge.
The Red Warriors hung on to the double-digit lead in the third quarter before widening the gap further in the fourth via an 18-4 scoring run toward their largest margin at 34.
“Pumunta kami dito para maglaro talaga,” said Pasaol. “Kailangan namin doblehin iyong effort. Pinakita namin iyong kaya naming gawin.”
Hubert Cani and Arvin Tolentino were the sole double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Tamaraws (2-2)./PN
