ILOILO – Students of the University of Iloilo’s (UI) College of Law volunteered to help preserve the Visayan Sea.

The college’s In Solidum Student Council presented to Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. a manifesto offering support and help to the provincial government that has made it a priority to combat illegal fishing most especially in the waters of northern Iloilo. These waters are part of the Visayan Sea.

Educating coastal communities about the importance of preserving marine resources is one of the activities they could do, said Joseph Allen Españo, vice president of the In Solidum Student Council.

“We, the undersigned Millennials, representing our generation and generations yet unborn, joined by our Elders, express our whole-hearted support to the good Provincial Government of Iloilo in its effort to protect the Visayan Sea,” read part of the manifesto.

In Solidum Student Council president Jane Claire Sudario said they were inspired by environmental lawyer Tony Oposa who spoke at a symposium last week on the importance of the Visayan Sea.

Oposa described the Visayan Sea as one of the last remaining centers of biodiversity in the world.

Sudario also commended Governor Defensor’s passion to protect the Visayan Sea and cited the provincial government’s intensified campaign against illegal fishing and coastal resource management programs.

The Visayan Sea, surrounded by the provinces of Iloilo, Masbate, Cebu, and Negros Occidental, is rich in aquatic resources.

“We call on all our national and local leaders to support and intensify the anti-illegal fishing campaign that is destroying the unparalleled natural heritage of Philippine marine life,” read part of the students’ manifesto.

In Solidum Student Council furnished with copies of the manifesto the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the offices of Sen. Cynthia Villar and Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol./PN
