Uncle ‘kills’ lad in San Joaquin

ILOILO City – A family feud turned fatal for a resident of Barangay Hawod, San Joaquin, Iloilo.

The suspect in the death of Joume Servano? His uncle, Aquilino.

Aquilino was detained in the custodial facility of the San Joaquin police station. He is facing a murder charge.

Investigation showed that Aquilino was acting on his suspicion that Joume was out to kill him when he shot the latter to death, said Senior Inspector Asencion Ortizo, San Joaquin police chief.

Joume was walking home at 1:30 p.m. on May 25 when his uncle – using a homemade 12-gauge shotgun – fired at him, police said.

Sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, Joume died on the spot.

Aquilino fled after the shooting but police officers arrested him later.

A hacking incident triggered by a family feud led to the shooting, police investigation showed.

Ortizo said a quarrel over an undetermined family issue prompted Joume to attack Aquilino on Nov. 23 last year, resulting in the amputation of the latter’s left hand.

Aquilino filed a frustrated murder charge against Joume.

The suspect claimed he received information that his nephew was planning to take him out because of the case he filed, Ortizo said.

Aquilino admitted to killing Joume, insisting he was only defending himself. He claimed he has received death threats from his nephew. He said he will face whatever charge that will be filed against him.

A relative, Hawod village chief Nelson Servano, turned over to the police the weapon used in the shooting./PN
