MANILA – After sensing the impact of its phantom trades during the off-season, the Mahindra Floodbuster has tapped the services of former league scoring champion Gary David.
David’s player agent Danny Espiritu on Tuesday said that the former Gilas Pilipinas three-point gunner has agreed in principle for a nine-month contract with the Floodbuster.
“I told Gary to consider the offer of Mahindra even if he will not receive maximum salary since his future is at stake here,” Espiritu said. “However, he will not yet suit up in Mahindra’s next game as he is still out of shape and wants to learn the team’s system.”
The 38-year-old David was left without a team at the start of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup after his contract was not renewed by defending champion San Miguel Beermen.
David, who is entering his 13th season in the league, will be playing for his fifth team in the PBA after suiting up for the Coca Cola Tigers, Air 21 Express, Meralco Bolts, and the Beermen.
The Floodbuster felt the absence of a go-to-guy on offense following a harrowing 97-75 defeat at the hands of GlobalPort Batang Pier with the Floodbuster getting points from off-the-bench players Alex Mallari, Jason Deutchman, and Reden Celda.
During the off-season, the Floodbuster traded away key players Aldrech Ramos, Keith Agovida, Bradwyn Guinto, and Juan Paolo Taha while not renewing Rommel Niño Canaleta, in an attempt to avoid signing players for maximum contracts./PN
