ILOILO City – De La Salle University Lady Spikers continued its rampage in the 24th University Games women’s volleyball after a 25-13, 25-11, 25-23 win over the Mapua University Lady Cardinals yesterday at the University of San Agustin Gym here.

Despite ending the elimination round with a perfect 4-0 win-loss record, Lady Spikers head coach Ramil de Jesus did not hide his disappointment due to their sloppy game against the Lady Cardinals.

The Lady Spikers, which finished runner-up in the past two editions of the Unigames, leaned on the heroics of incoming rookie Thea Gagate in the waning moments of the game to upend Mapua.

Defending champions University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses made a short work of Central Philippine University Golden Lions, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17, as the end the group match with 3-0 card.

Janna Elizabeth Torres tallied 10 points, build on six attacks, three service aces and one block.

Mafe Galanza added seven markers, all from service aces, while Janine Balcorta submitted six points for UST.

Meanwhile, University of St. La Salle-Bacolod booters reached the semifinals of the men’s football following a 1-0 victory over the College of St. Benilde Blazers on Wednesday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

The USLS became the second team from Group A to qualify to the semifinals aside from National University Bulldogs, which came from a 4-2 victory over Central Philippine University.

The USLS will battle Group B leader University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the semifinals on Friday, while the Bulldogs will tangle with Group B no. 2 seed University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers./PN
