ELVY Villagoniza captured a gold medal for the University of Santo Tomas in the 2018 Philippine University Games athletics in Dumaguete City.
The Iloilo City native topped the women’s triple jump with 11.67m, beating schoolmate Rosnani Pamaybay who settled for silver with 11.64m on Wednesday.
A day prior, the former Iloilo National High School standout clinched a silver medal in women’s long jump, where she was defeated by UST’s Alyssa Andrade, who hails from Aklan province.
“This is another achievement for me since first time kong sumali sa UniGames,” said Villagoniza, an incoming rookie for the UST track and field team. “I am satisfied with my performance. I just hope to improve if given a chance to compete here next year.”
UNO-R 2-0 IN MEN’S BASKETBALL
Meanwhile University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos had a strong start in men’s basketball with two straight victories over at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center in Dumaguete City.
UNO-R opened its campaign with a close 55-54 win over University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna before scoring a lopsided 54-35 triumph over home team Foundation University.
Other Western Visayas-based teams struggled. University of San Agustin bowed to Negros Oriental State University 63-74 and Colegio San Agustin Bacolod lost to Rizal Technological University 39-62.
In the women’s division, University of San Agustin suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of Polytechnic University of the Philippines (49-71) and Leyte Normal University (48-53)./PN
