AROUND 30 schools and universities are participating in various sporting events in the 2017 Philippine University Games, which is set to formally open today in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
The women’s volleyball face-off between defending champion University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and De La Salle University Lady Spikers is expected to draw the crowd to the Foundation University Valencia gym.
Golden Tigresses comprises Ennajie Laure, Cherry Rondina, Ilongga Shannen Palec, Mary Dominique Pacres, Christine Francisco, Rica Rivera, Carla Sandoval, Jem Gutierrez, and Caitlyn Viray.
Composing the Lady Spikers are Ernestine Tiamzon, Majoy Baron, Kim Dy, May Luna, Gyra Barroga, Desiree Cheng, Michelle Cobb, Rovena Instrella, Norielle Ipac, Arianne Layug, Dawn Macandili, CJ Saga, and Aduke Ogunsaya.
Other women’s volleyball teams are University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas, University of St. La Salle – Bacolod, University of Mindanao, Southwestern University, Foundation University, and Enderum College.
Also to be played in the weeklong event are men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s beach volleyball, men’s and women’s athletics, men’s and women’s table tennis, football, taekwondo, chess, and badminton.
Dumaguete has also hosted the UniGames in 2000, 2002, 2008, 2010, and 2016.
This year’s theme is “The Games that Bring Us Together for Unity and Peace.”/PN
