THE celebration of United Nations (UN) Week is in accordance with Proclamation No. 483, s. 2003 as signed by former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo “declaring the period from Oct. 18 to 24 and every year thereafter as United Nations Week.”
The celebration aims to make known to people the programs and achievements of the UN as an organization that promotes peace and security among nations.
Students from different schools in the Philippines usually observe UN Week by wearing the different national clothing of its member-states.
The Philippines was one of the original signatories of the UN Charter, which took effect on Oct. 24, 1945, and had been, in the beginning, a staunch supporter of its programs.
The intergovernmental organization serves as a beacon of peace, uniting nations of diverse cultures and systems. With 193 members to date, it had forged its way through addressing issues on health, environment, state unrest, and economy, among others./PN
