BACOLOD City – Unity. This was the most mentioned word in the speeches of national and local officials during the 119th Independence Day celebration yesterday at the Bacolod Public Plaza.
The event was graced by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority deputy director general Diosdado Padilla, Cong. Greg Gasataya, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, and Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.
Padilla, who delivered the speech in behalf of TESDA director general Guiling Mamondiong who was on official travel to Saudi Arabia, said being in the government service is a big sacrifice.
“The reason why I’m here is for public service and I hope everyone will unite in public service, in a clean and true government service,” Padilla said.
After citing in his speech that Bacolod City was named Top Model City, Leonardia said “it is time for us to come together.”
“Let us be united and it is a good start that the mayor and the congressman are working together,” he added.
Leonardia also mentioned that the city will soon be a recipient of a P10-million fund from Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri. A P10-million Bacolod Public Plaza rehabilitation project, meanwhile, is underway for Gasataya.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg and more will come because we are united,” said Leonardia.
For his part, Gasataya urged Bacolodnons to work together to retain Bacolod’s recognition as Top Model City in the country.
“We can only do that if all of us work together, set aside politics, and set aside everything,” the congressman stressed.
Familiaran, on the other hand, said Bacolodnons and Filipinos should unite to enjoy true freedom.
“Bacolodnon at kapwa ko Pilipino, ako’y naghihikayat na magkaisa tayong lahat upang ang tunay na kalayaan ay ating maipagdiwang,” he said.
The Independence Day celebration started with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by wreath-laying rites at the Monument of Unknown Soldiers. A parade was also held from Lizares-Araneta Streets, passing through major streets./PN
