ON April 28 to 30, 2019, the University of San Agustin (USA) through the Office of Research and Global Relations, shall host the 2nd USA-Academia Sinica (Taiwan) Bilateral Research Symposium and the Iloilo International Conference on Advanced Natural Products Technologies (I2CANProTech) in a premier hotel in Iloilo City.
I2CANProTech is a tribute to and celebration of Iloilo’s heritage and contribution to the global fight against infectious diseases as the source of the antibiotic named Ilosone® (Erythromycin). Notable international experts will discuss the biology, chemistry, and pharmacology of terrestrial, marine, and microbial natural products, development of probes and inhibitors for drug discovery, imaging mass spectrometry, agricultural biotechnology, and intellectual property protection of scientific discoveries, among others.
The Keynote Speaker of the conference will be Dr. Pei-Yuan Qian, David von Hansemann Professor of Science and Chair Professor in Division of Life Science at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Prof. Qian will give a lecture on Genome-mining coupled with biosynthesis pathway manipulation as a powerful tool for bioactive compound discovery. Dr. Doralyn S. Dalisay, USA Professor of Biology and DOST Balik Scientist, will talk about about the discovery of new antibiotics from Philippine marine sediments against multi-drug resistant microorganisms, including flesh-eating bacteria, at the Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2) of the USA. Dr. Chun-Hung Lin, Director General of Department of Academic Affairs and a Research Fellow of Institute of Biological Chemistry of Academia Sinica, shall lead the team of scientists from Taiwan and deliver a lecture on approaches for investigating the enzymes associated with infectious diseases and cancers while Dr. Assem S. el Baghdady, Director of USA Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) and Managing Director of AlphaBeta Pharma in the United Kingdom, will talk about strategies on patent protection. Other prominent speakers include Dr. Mary J. Garson (University of Queensland, Australia), Dr. Jamia A. Jamal (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Dr. Todd L. Lowary (University of Alberta, Canada), Dr. Brandon I. Morinaka (National University of Singapore), Dr. Maribel G. Nonato (University of Santo Tomas, Philippines), and Dr. Dong-Chan Oh (Seoul National University, Korea).
