MANILA – Fire razed the University of the Philippines (UP) Shopping Center in Diliman, Quezon City yesterday.

“Fire out” was declared at 8:53 a.m. The fire reached up to second alarm at 7:36 a.m., said Quezon City Fire Marshal Manuel M. Manuel.

Aside from the shopping center – known to students as SC – at least three other infrastructures inside the university were razed by fire in the last four years.

The latest was the university’s Faculty Center on April 1, 2016.

The iconic College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association (CASAA) Food Center and the Alumni Center turned to ashes in June and July 2015, only two weeks apart.

UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan said the university needs a fire station as a solution to handling fire.

May naka-allocate na from the local government. Sana naman this year maitayo na,” Tan said.

“The closest fire station is at least 20 minutes away,” he added. “Panahon na. We have 70,000 people living here.”

The UP Shopping Center, located near the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice and the University Infirmary, houses photocopying stalls and several restaurants, including the iconic Rodic’s Diner. (CNN Philippines)
