MANILA – University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons remained unbeaten in the UAAP Season 81 men’s football after a 2-1 victory over Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles the other day at the FEU-Diliman pitch.
Dan Saavedra opened the scoring for the defending champion Fighting Maroons with a 42nd minute penalty before King Miyagi doubled the advantage four minutes after the restart.
Rupert Baña netted a conversion for the Blue Eagles in the 79th minute but was unable to follow it up a game-tying conversion with the Fighting Maroons tightening on its defense.
University of the East Red Warriors, meanwhile, took the top of the table after splitting points with Adamson University following a 1-1 stalemate. The Red Warriors now have seven points.
In the other match, Frederico Alegre and Mikio Umilin found the back of the net in the first half as the De La Salle University Green Archers bested National University Bulldogs, 2-1.
In women’s action at the Circulo Verde pitch, last year’s runner-up UST Golden Tigresses beat UP Lady Maroons, 2-1, behind Shelah Cadag’s 64th and 81st minute goals.
Joyce Ann Onrubia, Ilongga Jovelle Sudaria and Roselle Marie Lecera entered the score sheet as the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws rout Ateneo Lady Eagles, 3-0./PN
