UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Fighting Maroons showed its grit and dominance as it swept the Iloilo PRISAA selection team in their two-day exhibition match over the weekend.
The Fighting Maroons leaned on Ricci Rivero, Kobe Paras, Bright Akhuetie, Juan Gomez de Liano, and Javi Gomez de Liano to score a 78-66 win over Iloilo PRISAA on Sunday at the University of San Agustin Gym.
The Fighting Maroons started strong in the game as it took a 24-14 lead after a quarter before widening it to 44-22 at the half behind the inside conversions of Rivero and Paras.
By second half, the Fighting Maroons already established its largest lead at 60-34 before the Iloilo PRISAA came up with late conversions to trim the final margin to 12 points.
On Saturday afternoon, the Fighting Maroons were also dominant as it cruised to a 74-65 domination over the Iloilo PRISAA in a match held before a sellout crowd at the City of Passi Arena.
Rivero led the way with 17 points, while Akhuetie and Paras submitted 12 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Fighting Maroons, which used the exhibition as part of their build up for the UAAP season.
This was the third time that the Dolreich Perasol-mentored Fighting Maroons played in Western Visayas after participating in a pocket tournament in Passi City on July 2018 and playing in Pototan two years ago./PN
