BACOLOD City – Farmers and fisherfolk in Negros Island Region may acquire loans of up to P50,000 from the government.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) was launching the Production Loan Easy Access (PLEA) program on June 23, said Negros Island Region director Joyce Wendam.
Loans that may be acquired through conduit banks under the PLEA program range from P10,000 to P50,000, Wendam said, adding that the DA will release specific guidelines pertaining to the process soon.
Wendam revealed this during the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month culminating activity on May 26 at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel.
Several local government units participated in the event themed “Hamungaya nga Agrikultura kag Bugana nga Pangisdaan, Mainuswagon nga Pungsod.”
Wendam said the event highlighted how crucial rice productivity is.
“[There is a need] to increase the productivity of rice farmers for us to be self-sufficient,” she said. “If production increases, the income of the farmers increases, too.”
Among the activities were exhibits on crops and livestock, talks on corporate rice farming and women in agricultural development, testimonials from farmers, and the awarding of the 2016 Rice Achievers.
Valladolid was recognized as Outstanding Municipality in rice production, while Grace Ariola and Girlie Gayanilo of Hinigaran and Valladolid towns, respectively, were the Outstanding Agricultural Extension Workers. Pastor Jerry Dionson and Sarah Villaflor were the Outstanding Local Farmer Technicians./PN
