BACOLOD City – Some areas here had no electricity for several hours after trees fell on cables and damaged posts yesterday.
Due to strong winds and heavy rains, a giant tamarind tree was uprooted in Barangay Taculing and a Gmelina in Barangay Alijis, said Executive Assistant Jomarie Vargas, cluster head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).
CDRRMO personnel immediately undertook clearing operations of power poles bent over and tree-blocked roads. They used chainsaws to cut the tree into smaller parts and lift these one by one, said Vargas.
On the other hand, Roel Venus, chief of Central Negros Electric Cooperative’s (Ceneco) member-consumer integrated services division, said the power interruption occurred around 12:14 p.m. Power returned between 4 and 5 p.m.
Vargas said they will thoroughly clean drainage systems to preempt major flooding.
In its weather forecast Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the tail-end of a frontal system or shear line continued to cause rain in Bicol and parts of the Visayas./PN
