ILOILO – The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) campus in Miag-ao, Iloilo was evacuated on Wednesday, November 29, following a bomb threat sent via chat to the campus’ CCTV operator, claiming an explosive device was planted on university grounds.

Police Major Richard Lao, chief of the Miag-ao municipal police station, said officers conducted an initial visual inspection before calling in the Explosives Ordnance Division (EOD) for a thorough search.

The EOD later declared the campus safe.

To prioritize safety, UPV administration suspended in-person classes and shifted to remote learning and work-from-home arrangements.

The Accounts, the official student publication of the UPV College of Management, confirmed the temporary cancellation of classes in a Facebook announcement.

This is the second bomb threat targeting an educational institution in Iloilo this month. Earlier, a similar incident at the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U) in La Paz, Iloilo City also led to class suspensions.

Authorities are investigating the source of these threats and have called on the public to remain vigilant and comply with safety protocols./PN
