ILOILO City – The local government is urging pedestrians to use the overpass on Luna Street, La Paz district, near the West Visayas Visayas State University and the Department of Education – Division of Iloilo office.
Long unkempt and underutilized, the overpass was rehabilitated and – just this Feb. 6 – officially “reopened” for public use in a ceremony graced by Mayor Jose Espinosa III, City Engineer Bobby Divinagracia and school officials.
The “revival” of the Luna overpass was part of the city government’s plan to encourage the use of all overpasses across the city, according to Jeck Conlu, head of the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO).
Under the PSTMO is the Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office, which is tasked to enforce traffic rules.
The PSTMO will assign personnel that will catch those who will not use the overpass, Conlu said.
Only senior citizens and persons with disabilities are allowed to cross that part of Luna Street via the pedestrian lane, he stressed.
Moreover, the PSTMO will conduct a “traffic education campaign” starting March to teach students in all levels – especially minors – on how to properly abide by traffic rules, said Conlu.
He expects the campaign to be completed in June in the time for the opening of classes./PN
