MANILA – The damage wrought by tropical storm “Usman” to the farm sector has reached P957.6 million, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Monday.
Up to 88 percent of the damage was to rice crops, the DA said in a statement. The storm, which hit land after Christmas, affected 42,863 families of farmers and fishermen covering 47,529 hectares.
The storm also caused P3.3 billion in damage to infrastructure, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in its latest report said.
Agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol called for the planting of more trees and the dredging of rivers to minimize floods. (ABS-CBN News)
