MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses opened its Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference campaign with a 25-15, 20-25, 25-13, 25-21 upset over the Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers on Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Ennajie Laure and Carla Sandoval led the way with 19 points apiece for the Golden Tigresses, which tied the Laoag Power Smashers on top of the standings with a 1-0 win-loss slate.
MarivicMeneses chipped in 15 markers, while Chlodia Cortez contributed 12 points for the Golden Tigresses, which will aim for its second straight win against the Philippine Coast Guard Lady Dolphins.
The Golden Tigresses had a rusty start in the opening set until it gained the lead at 17-13. The edge later went up to as high as 10 points as the Golden Tigresses took advantage of errors by the Jet Spikers.
After dropping the second set, the Golden Tigresses regained its form in the third frame to build a 16-8 lead. The Jet Spikers then scored consecutive hits but the Golden Tigresses had its answer to clinch the set.
After a close exchange early in the fourth set, the Jet Spikers cruised to a 16-11 lead but the Golden Tigresses leaned on Laure and Sandoval to surge ahead at 17-16. They later ended the match with an 8-4 scoring capped by a Meneses hit to seal the win.
“Nag-respond naman ang mga bata sa challenge although may mga lapses sa dulo,” said Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio Reyes. “Pero ang importante is nakakabalik din at ‘yun nga ang maturity ng mga bata.”
Iari Yongco posted 11 points while Joy Cases had nine markers for the Lady Jet Spikers, which tied the Lady Dolphins at last place in the standings with a 0-1 win-loss record./PN
