
MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses encountered challenges against Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles before pulling off a 25-15, 26-24, 26-24 win in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Angeline Poyos top-scored with 16 points, including 15 attacks and a service ace, to go with four excellent digs and one excellent reception, as the Golden Tigresses climbed to solo third place with a 7-4 win-loss slate.
Regina Jurado and rookie Marga Altea added 10 markers apiece, while Maribeth Hilongo contributed eight markers for the Golden Tigresses, which have won their last two matches.
After a dominant win in the opening set, the Golden Tigresses found themselves down 22-24 before they got consecutive attacks from Altea and Poyos to take a 26-24 set victory.
The Golden Tigresses were ahead at 22-20 late in the third set, but the Blue Eagles forced a deadlock at 24-all. Poyos then ended the match for UST with back-to-back conversions.
AC Miner finished with 13 points, while Lyann de Guzman added 12 markers as the Blue Eagles dropped to a 4-7 win-loss card.
Meanwhile, De La Salle University Lady Spikers cruised to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-23 straight-set win over University of the East Lady Warriors.
Negrense Angel Canino spearheaded the offense with 16 points, including 12 attacks, three blocks, and a service ace, as the Lady Spikers tightened their hold on the No. 2 spot with an 8-3 win-loss slate.
Shevana Laput added 14 markers, including 12 attacks, while Ilongga Amie Provido contributed nine markers for the Lady Spikers, who are on a three-game winning streak.
Nessa Bangayan finished with 13 points, while Khy Cepada added 11 markers as the Lady Warriors remained winless in 11 matches./PN
