MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas moved closer to clinching a rare championship double after drawing first blood in both the men’s and women’s finals of the UAAP 79 beach volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Sands SM By the Bay in Pasay City.
The Golden Tigresses’ Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez swept the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws pair of Negrense Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza, 21-17, 21-9, in Game 1 of the best-of-three titular showdown.
The Golden Tigresses hope to annex its fourth women’s beach volleyball title with another win in Game 2 at 9:30 a.m. today. The Golden Tigresses is currently tied with the Adamson Lady Falcons for the most number of women’s titles with three.
The Tiger Spikers pair of Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto also moved closer to reclaiming the men’s beach volleyball crown after beating the FEU Tamaraws’ Jude Garcia and Jeremiah Barrica, 21-13, 21-11, in their own championship series.
The Tiger Spikers seek to secure its third crown with another victory in Game 2 scheduled at 9 a.m. UST has two men’s championships behind FEU and National University’s three.
On their way to the finals, the Lady Tamaraws dethroned De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ Kim Fajardo and Christine Tiamzon, 21-17, 21-15. The Lady Spikers bowed out at third place.
The Tamaraws, meanwhile, overcame the University of the Philippines Maroons’ twice-to-beat edge in the semifinals, as Barrica and Garcia defeated Alfred Valbuena and Wendel Miguel, 22-20, 21-18, in the first match, and 22-20, 18-21, 16-14, in the decider./PN
