
MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses notched its fifth consecutive win in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball after sweeping Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, on Sunday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Angeline Poyos top-scored with 19 points from 16 attacks, two service aces, and a block, to go with five excellent receptions and four excellent digs as the Golden Tigresses moved up to a 5-1 mark.
Regina Jurado added 14 markers, built on 12 attacks and two blocks, while Pia Abbu contributed five blocks and eight attacks to end up with 13 points for the Golden Tigresses.
After being down 6-11 early in the opening set, UST leaned on attacks from Poyos and Jurado to turn things around and take an 18-14 lead. More connections from Poyos allowed the Golden Tigresses to wrap up the set, 25-20.
Both teams engaged in a tight battle in the second set with the Golden Tigresses clinging to a 24-23 lead after an ace by Blue Eagles’ Yvanna Sulit, but Poyos ended the set for UST with an off-the-block hit.
UST jumped to an 11-6 lead in the third set, but Ateneo kept the match close the rest of the way before the Golden Tigresses relied on timely attacks from Poyos, Jurado, and Abbu to wrap up the match.
Alexa Miner top-scored for the Blue Eagles with 13 points on 11 attacks, one block, and one service ace, while Lyann de Guzman contributed 11 markers. They slipped to a 1-4 mark.
Meanwhile, National University Lady Bulldogs overpowered the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-13, 25-22, 25-23, to stay undefeated after five matches.
Mhicaela Belen led the way with 17 points, all coming from attacks, to go with seven excellent receptions and three excellent digs, Alyssa Solomon added 16 markerswhile Evangeline Alinsug contributed 11 points for NU.
Kassandra Doering finished with 11 points, on eight attacks and three blocks, while Kianne Olango and Negrense Joan Marie Monares had 10 and eight points, respectively, as the Fighting Maroons dropped to a 2-4 record./PN
