UST sweeps Mapua for back-to-back SSL wins

MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses secured their second straight win in the Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-season Championship with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 sweep over Mapua University Lady Cardinals at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Incoming rookie Kyla Cordora led the Golden Tigresses’ balanced attacks with nine points, all coming from attacks, as they surged to second place in Pool B with a 2-0 win-loss slate.

“Nag-enjoy lang kami sa game. Naglaro kami na relax nung first set, we just played our game and dinahan-dahan lang namin,” Cordora said during her Player of the Game interview.

Xyza Gula and Margaret Altea finished with eight and seven markers, respectively, while Jonna Perdido and Regina Jurado ended with six markers apiece for the Golden Tigresses.

Bianca Plaza pushed the Golden Tigresses at match point, 24-17, on a quick attack but the Lady Cardinals refused to go down without a fight as it answered with three straight points before Cordora closed it out with a powerful hit.

Alyanna Ong finished with eight points to lead the way for the Lady Cardinals, which remained winless in three games.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons rallied from a set down to ground Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23, for their first win in three games in Pool C.

Kassandra Doering spearheaded the offense for the Fighting Maroons with 16 points, on nine attacks and seven blocks, while Negrense Joan Marie Monares added 11 markers and Nina Ytang contributed 10 points.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws scored a 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 25-19 victory over College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers. Jazlyn Ellarina led the way with 16 points.

Adamson University Lady Falcons, on the other hand, scored a 25-23, 25-11, 25-15 straight set win over San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags. Shaina Nitura top-scored for the Lady Falcons with 17 points./PN
