
MANILA – University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses overcame a tough challenge from Adamson University Lady Falcons for a 25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 27-25 win in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Angeline Poyos finished with 21 points, built on 20 attacks and a block, to go with eight excellent receptions and five excellent digs as the Golden Tigresses climbed to solo second place with a 3-1 win-loss slate.
Regina Jurado added 17 points, on 13 attacks, three blocks, and a service ace, while Pia Abbu ended with 10 markers, on eight attacks and two service aces, for the Golden Tigresses.
After a lopsided third-set victory, the Golden Tigresses were pushed to the limit by the Lady Falcons in the fourth set with the score tied at 25-all following an attack error by Adamson’s Frances Mordi.
Jurado then surged the Golden Tigresses to match point at 26-25 after she blocked Mordi. UST then sealed the victory following an attack error from Adamson’s Shaina Nitura.
“Very satisfied naman sa performance ng mga bata even if nag-four sets kami,” said UST assistant coach Yani Fernandez after the game. “Nag-stick kami sa game plan and inilaban naman ng mga bata, pinusuan nila ‘yung laro.”
Nitura top-scored for the Lady Falcons with 28 points, on 26 attacks and two service aces, while Mordi contributed 13 markers. They dropped to a 2-2 win-loss card.
Meanwhile, National University Lady Bulldogs hardly broke a sweat to secure a commanding 25-12, 25-11, 25-20 victory over the University of the East Lady Warriors.
Mhicaela Belen top-scored with 18 points, on 14 attacks, three blocks, and a service ace, to go with eight excellent digs and six excellent receptions for the reigning champions Lady Bulldogs.
Evangeline Alinsug added 10 markers, all coming from attacks, Erin Pangilinan contributed eight markers, and Alyssa Solomon tallied six as the Lady Bulldogs stayed on top with a 4-0 win-loss slate./PN
