MANILA – The Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors cruised to its third straight win in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 sweep over the Bureau of Customs Transformers on Saturday night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
American reinforcement Breanna Mackie led the way with 14 points, on 13 attacks and one service ace, for the Lady Warriors, which tied the Bali Pure Water Defenders at second place with a 3-1 win-loss slate.
Myla Pablo chipped in 11 markers, on nine attacks and two blocks, while Michelle Gumabao contributed eight points for the Lady Warriors, which is gunning for its second crown in the league.
“Happy kami sa turnout ngayon kasi nakikita namin na nagdyi-jell na ang team,” said Lady Warriors head coach Rommel Abella. “Mga 85 to 90 percent na ang mag-jell ng team namin so happy kami sa effort na ibinigay nila (vs Transformers).”
The Lady Warriors had a dominant start in the opening set and was holding on to a 22-16 lead until the Transformers went on a rally behind Alyssa Valdez to come to within 23-21. Back-to-back hits by Gumabao and Pablo closed the set.
Unlike in the first set, both teams had a tight exchange in the second frame with the Lady Warriors holding on to a slim 16-15 lead. The Lady Warriors then leaned on consecutive points by Gumabao and Andrea Kacsits to take a 2-0 set lead.
The two teams had a see-saw battle early in the third frame until the Lady Warriors turned an 8-7 upper hand to a 16-12 spread. It later went up to 11 markers following blocks from Pablo.
Two-time league MVP Valdez finished with 18 points, including 15 attacks, while Thai import Kanjana Kuthaisong added 10 markers for the Transformers, which slid down to a 3-2 record./PN
