A TAEKWONDO jin from Iloilo City was the lone gold medal winner among Western Visayas-based athletes on the third day of the 2018 Batang Pinoy National Finals on Wednesday in Baguio City.
Senddrick Alfaro Valencia captured topped the cadet middleweight category after beating Arwyn Wagtingan of Baguio City in the finals. France Corales of Olongapo City and Tom Joshua Fullo of Tagum City clinched the bronze.
Ilonggo Julian Miguel Tingson, meanwhile, settled for a silver medal in the kyorugi event while Denz Palonpon and Ma. Cassandra Leporada bagged a bronze medal each.
Antonette Jay Aguillon of Bacolod City fell short of a possible third gold medal after settling for bronze in the girls 200m dash at the Baguio Athletic Bowl.
A gold medal winner in the 100m dash and 4x100m relay, Aguillon was disappointed after the match as she struggled in the final 50 meters after being on top early on.
“Sayang nabantayan po ako (ng other opponent) noong last 50 meters. I am still thankful na naka-medal here in 200m since ang pet event ko po talaga ay ang 100m,” said the athlete, who will still campaign in the 4x400m relay and triple jump.
Ara Rahbea Delotavo also stumbled on a possible third gold after finishing fifth in 400m hurdles. Klyde Montalbo landed fifth in 2000m walk, Chester Albes placed sixth in 200m dash and John Paul Papio ended up fifth in 400m hurdles.
Meanwhile the Sagay City Futsal Team maintained their unblemished slate after lopsided wins against Tagum (5-0), Tanauan (3-1), Pangasinan (3-1), and Vigan (5-0).
St. John’s Institute, representing Negros Occidental, opened its campaign in girls’ volleyball with a victory over Baguio City selection on Tuesday afternoon at the University of Cordilleras./PN
