KALIBO, Aklan – Stalled by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and relocation issues, the construction of a new Kalibo public market is finally starting soon.

The Kalibo Public Market is initially projected to cost P300 million. It will be constructed for 450 calendar days and is expected to be finished by 2024.

The “Bagong Kalibo” Public Market will have adequate parking spaces, spacious fish, vegetable and meat sections, restrooms and a drainage system.

Noe Pador, market supervisor, said the half lane of Toting Reyes Street is allotted for the parking area of heavy equipment and trucks of the contractor, while the market sidewalk facing it will accommodate the displaced vendors.

The meat and fish sections will be relocated to the middle portion of the market.

An unused property along Toting Reyes Street or on XIX Martyrs Street is eyed as a temporary relocation site for ambulant vendors.

Kalibo mayor Juris Sucro said the redevelopment would boost local economic and entrepreneurial activities.

Rotaflex Construction and Development Company, a Manila-based contractor, won the bidding.

On September 2019, a fire incident partially destroyed the Kalibo public market./PN
