MANILA – Shanden Vergara netted two goals as the De La Salle University Green Archers scored a 2-1 stunner over University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in UAAP Season 81 men’s football on Thursday at the FEU-Diliman pitch.
The San Carlos City, Negros Occidental native midfielder converted a brace as the Green Archers kept the Fighting Maroons at bay and surged to No. 1 spot with nine points.
Vergara, who is a standout from De La Salle-Zobel, said that he feels relieved to finally scoring his first goal in the college level and was able to help the school score a huge upset.
“Masaya, kasi, hindi ko inexpect this kind of game na intense, and I’m really happy to score a couple of goals for my school, kasi mahirap ‘to, mahirap maka-score sa UAAP college level,” said Vergara.
The defeat halted defending champions’ Fighting Maroons’ remarkable 16-match undefeated streak as head coach Anto Gonzales’ side remained at six points at fourth place.
Meanwhile, Jarvey Gayoso scored twice as the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles chalked up its first win with a 5-0 rout of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.
Julian Roxas, Rupert Baña and rookie Luca Alleje were also on target in the 59th, 69th and 84th minute, respectively for the Blue Eagles to improve at four points.
Far Eastern University Tamaraws moved up to solo second with eight points following a 2-1 victory over National University Bulldogs. Goalscorers for the Tamaraws were Gibo Mendoza and Poi Saldivar./PN
