ILOILO City – Veteran radio broadcaster Sumakwel “Kap Mack” Nava died Sunday. He was 81.
His son, Councilor Plaridel Nava, announced on Facebook: “It is with deep sorrow to inform our family and friends that Papa Mack joined our Creator at exactly 12:54 in the morning of July 10, 2022 at the age of 81. My brothers and sisters and the grandchildren are all at the hospital when Papa Mack passed away.”
The elder Nava had also served as barangay captain and kagawad of Libertad, Lapuz district.
“Details of the interment will be posted soon. Please pray for the repose of Papa Mack’s soul,” Councilor Nava further posted on Facebook.
The remains of Kap Mack were cremated.
“Rest in Peace, Papa! You are forever loved and cherished,” Councilor Nava wrote on Facebook.
Public viewing of Kap Mack’s urn at St. Peter Memorial Chapel in Mandurriao district, which started at 5 p.m. yesterday, will be until July 13.
A necrological service and Holy Mass would be held on July 14, 2 p.m. at the Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Lapuz.
Thereafter, according to Councilor Nava, his father’s urn would be moved to their ancestral house in Barangay Libertad, Lapuz.
At age of 23 and for 20 years, Kap Mack became the youngest and longest serving barangay captain of Barangay Magsaysay, City Proper.
He also served for five terms as punong barangay of Libertad, Lapuz.
He once worked as anchorman and commentator in radio stations DYRP, DYBQ Radyo Budyong, and DYRI Radyo Agong.
He was also the founder and publisher of Frontline newspaper, a local news outlet in the 1980s and 1990s; a former blocktimer at DYOK, Aksyon Radyo 720 and the original host of “Timbangan sang Katarungan”; and a guest host of defunct “Reklamo Publiko” with the main host, the late Danny Fajardo, founder of Panay News./PN
