ILOILO City — Veteran volleyball coach Godfrey Okumu has been tasked to help the Sta. Clarita International School Primes elementary and secondary girls volleyball teams.
According to Sta. Clarita sports director Rodolfo Go Villaruz, the Kenyan mentor will assist Primes head coach Dax Llige and assistant coach Ekay Palacios in their preparation for the ILOPRISAA tourney.
“We are very thrilled to welcome coach Okumu in our school and thankful that he agreed to train our elementary and secondary girls volleyball team starting February 9,” Villaruz told Panay News.
“He is a veteran volleyball coach and has handled a lot of teams here in the Philippines, so his inputs will ve vital for these young volleyball players,” he added.
Okumu was a former head coach of University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in UAAP women’s volleyball team and handled the defunct Motolite team in the Premier Volleyball League.
He has also previously assisted Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts squad and is currently serving as an assistant coach for Galeries Tower Highrisers in PVL.
The Primes recently came from a title finish in the 2024 Dinagyang Inter-school Volleyball League after they defeated Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix in the finals.
Janna Kate Ardales emerged as MVP in the said tournament, Jiuliane Castañeda as Best Setter, while Angelix Joyce Silao and Shaira Co Magbanua served as team captains.
Also part of the team are Mary Den Majaba, Jamela Taguibe, Laila Jean Bacalso, Kate Almongera, Sofia Teñas, Rhianba Occeñola, Shelou Rebusquillo, Moiselle Bayot, Ermae Dequito, Rachielyn Marticio, and Jilian Verdeflor.
“We are really determined to improve the skills of this players so that we can help them achieve their dreams of possibly getting notice by Manila-based schools,” Villaruz said./PN
