Village chiefs indifferent to anti-drug drive – Salinas

ILOILO City – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. has ordered the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) to identify barangay captains not supportive of the campaign against illegal drugs.

Once identified, the governor will call them in a meeting and personally seek their cooperation.

Many barangay captains were not cooperative with the police, according to Senior Supt. Cornelio Salinas, IPPO director, during a recent Provincial Peace and Order Council meeting.

“The governor saw that we are solely waging the campaign and we find it hard to do so,” said Salinas.

On Sunday, Defensor spoke before some 9,000 barangay officials who gathered for a provincial assembly at the Iloilo Sports Complex here. He urged them to get involved in the campaign against drug trafficking.

At the very least, they should give the police information that could lead to the arrest of drug traffickers, he stressed.

“Our community will not progress nor achieve real peace if there are problems and criminalities because of illegal drugs,” Defensor said.
