ILOILO City – A village councilman was shot dead and his companion wounded in Barangay Ilas Sur, Dao, Capiz.

Police said land dispute may have caused the shooting that killed 53-year-old Roger Capulso on Friday night last week.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Capulso and friends Jose and Helen Denosta had a chance meeting with Reynaldo Tanong of Barangay Ilas Norte while walking home, said Inspector Peter John Pisueño, Dao police chief.

Tanong suddenly fired his gun, said Pisueño. Capulso dropped on the ground. On the other hand, Jose, although wounded, managed to run away with sister Helen.

Minutes after the shooting, Capulso was found dead.

Pisueño said Tanong was heard saying, “Ano gusto nyo, tinirohay?” followed by a burst of gunfire.

“The suspect’s employer and the victim had a long-standing land dispute,” said Pisueño.

Tanong’s employer was claiming ownership on a parcel of land that Capulso’s family was insisting was theirs, he said.

“We have police blotter reports about previous incidents related to the land dispute,” Pisueño added.

He ordered a manhunt against Tanong./PN
