BACOLOD City – Sen. Cynthia Villar and Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. will attend the Farmers’ Day at the Bantayan Park in Bago City, Negros Occidental on Feb. 19, Mayor Nicholas Yulo said.
The Farmers’ Day culminates the weeklong 51st Charter Day celebration of Bago City.
Agriculture was the center of the celebration, according to the mayor.
An agricultural city, Bago produces more than 50 percent of the rice supply in Negros Occidental, Yulo claimed.
Around 90 percent of its population depends on agriculture, so the local government works to continuously modernize production to improve the farmers’ income, Yulo said.
They are also aiming to make Bago City the agro-industrial and ecotourism center of the province, he said.
Villar — while no longer the Senate agriculture committee chairwoman — will visit Bago as an agriculture advocate, said Yulo.
On Day 1 of the Charter Day celebration on Monday, 24 barangays displayed their products during the Agro-Industrial, Cultural and Educational Trade Fair.
Yulo said the local government also honored pastor and farmer Jerry Dionson for having won as Outstanding Organic Agriculture Farmer during the 46th Gawad Saka Award at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on Dec. 12 last year.
Dionson was also recognized as Organic Farmer of the Year, the mayor said./PN
