BACOLOD City – A 1,000-pound vintage bomb was unearthed at a quarry site in Purok Lambunao, Barangay Magsaysay, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.

Rolly Pelongco was digging using a backhoe past 11 p.m. on Monday when he accidentally discovered the munition, according to the Cadiz City police.

He immediately contacted the authorities, and an Explosive and Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was dispatched.

The ordnance was believed to be an M65 general-purpose bomb used by US forces during World War II.

According to the National Museum of the United States Air Force website, the M65 is typically used against reinforced targets such as dams and concrete or steel railroad bridges.

Meanwhile, the Australian War Memorial website stated that the M65 bomb could also be used to target ammunition dumps, aircraft on the ground, and some warships.

Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office spokesperson Police Captain Judesses Catalogo said the EOD units have cordoned off the area. Locals were also told to stay away as the bomb could still be live.

Catalogo also revealed that the Imperial Japanese forces had operated an airfield in the area during the war.

The city government would also provide the necessary supplies to safely disarm or dispose of the bomb. (Watchmen Daily Journal)
