Virus hampers launching of Iloilo league

ILOILO City – Due to the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 threat, the launching of a year-round sports league for this city and in Iloilo province this year is being hampered.
Ilonggo sportsman Rodolfo Go Villaruz told Panay News yesterday that the league, which he co-founded, will likely be introduced next year.

“It is very unfortunate that we have to postpone the launching of this event. But of course, it is for the safety of the Ilonggos,” said Villaruz. “We will use this time to prepare well for our launching season.”

According to Villaruz, the year-round competition composed of three conferences was a brainchild of his and seven others who are businessmen, sports enthusiasts and an Iloilo Province mayor.
In the inaugural season, they will focus first on basketball and volleyball before assessing if they will also organize other sports events.
The three conferences for basketball and volleyball are as follows: First conference is all-Ilonggo, second conference will allow teams to have two guest players, while the third is open conference.

Villaruz said:  “This is for the Ilonggo sports fans. They will have a chance to witness Iloilo’s very own year-round league. We will wait for the progress of this health crisis and see the government’s guidelines on sports in this ‘new normal’ era.”/PN
