Visayas grid back to normal — NGCP

BACOLOD City — After expecting a 200-megawatt (MW) power shortage last week, the Visayas grid is back to normal with a power reserve of 208 MW.

Now there is enough power supply to address the 1,500-MW demand in central, western and eastern Visayas, said Ma. Rosette Martinez, communications officer for Visayas of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

NGCP reported as of 6 a.m. yesterday that the Visayas grid has a system capacity of 1,642 MW and a system peak of 1,434 MW.

Three Visayas power plants had undergone an emergency shutdown last week.

They were the plants of Cebu Energy Development Corp. (CEDC) in Cebu, Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) in Iloilo and Energy Development Corp. (EDC) in Tongonan, Leyte.

Among them, EDC first went back online on Wednesday, restoring its 36-MW power supply to the grid, while PEDC went back online on Saturday, supplying 82 MW to the grid.

Electric cooperatives in Negros Occidental have braced themselves after the NGCP reported of a possible power shortage.

Managers of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative and the VMC Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc. earlier said they might implement rotational brownouts in their respective franchise areas in case of load shedding./PN
