MANILA – Negrense Alyssa Bertolano is set to suit up for th ABCamp Baguio team in the VolleyPrep Volleyball Club Championship 2021 beginning this weekend at the Naga College Foundation Volleyball Center in Naga City.
ABCamp Baguio coach Sherry Ann Gapuz Floresca confirmed the addition of the incoming University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons rookie to her roster for the week-long event.
“Alyssa and (Fighting Maroons setter) Zen Basilio will be playing for us in the Volleyprep,” said Floresca, who also mentored the Baguio Lady Highlanders in the PNVF Champions League recently.
Bertolano joined the ABCamp Baguio early this week and was with the squad during their series of tune-up matches with another Volleyprep participant, Chery Tiggo Thunderbolts.
For the 19-year-old Bertolano, this will also be her first competitive volleyball in almost two years or during her third year with the Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts.
“I am thankful to coach Sherry for this opportunity. This is my first time to play after almost two years. Prior to this, it was only virtual workouts for me with UP,” Bertolano said.
The Negrense added: “This is also a nice and exciting experience for me. I am just looking forward to this before (I make) my UAAP debut with UP.”
Aside from Baguio and Thunderbolts, other squads playing in the week-long event are Monolith Tigers of Naga City, Kings Montessori School Lady Vikings, California Precision Sports, Parañaque Lady Green Berets, Tacloban City Red Stallions, and Fourth District Nueva Ecija.
The eight squads will be divided into two groups of four with the top two teams after the group matches advancing to the knockout semifinals. The championship will also be one game.
The VolleyPrep Volleyball Club Championship 2021 is a Naga City local government unit-sanctioned volleyball tournament that will be held in bubble-format./PN
