MANILA – Vice President Leni Robredo was unfazed by impeachment threats being hurled against her after expressing her support for the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution to conduct a probe in the administration’s war on drugs.
Robredo’s spokesman Ibarra Gutierrez said the impeachment plot against the vice president was nothing new and she was not affected by the latest threat.
“VP Leni has been threatened with impeachment before. This is nothing new or original,” Gutierrez said. “She has faced threats of impeachment, an electoral protest, online harassment, and fake news ever since she assumed office.”
“She has never let any of these distract her from her focus on helping uplift the lives of her fellow Filipinos, particularly the poor, or prevent her from fulfilling the oath she took,” he added.
“If someone once again wants to make headlines by floating yet another impeachment threat, let them. We’ve lived through worse, and we won’t lose sleep over it. ‘Yung walang ginawang mali walang kailangang ikatakot,” Gutierrez said.
Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission chief Manuelito Luna on Saturday said Robredo could be impeached for expressing support for the UNHRC’s resolution “against” the Philippine government.
“(Robredo’s) suggestion that the administration could be guilty of human rights abuses was tantamount to a betrayal of public trust,” Luna said.
Robredo earlier urged President Rodrigo Duterte to allow UNHRC to conduct its investigation into the human rights situation in the country “if they had nothing to hide.”/PN
