ILOILO City – Police Brigadier General Jack L. Wanky, regional director of the Police Regional Office 6, voiced his apprehensions regarding the recent advancements in the legalization of medical marijuana in the Philippines, following its progression in the House bill last week.
While acknowledging potential medicinal benefits, Wanky emphasized the need for cautious consideration due to the potential threats it poses to law enforcement.
“If you’re going to legalize that, control man gihapon eh,” Wanky said yesterday, as he underscored the importance of maintaining strict regulations to prevent its misuse.
Furthermore, Wanky clarified that even if medical marijuana were to be legalized, consumption by the general public would likely remain prohibited. He reiterated the importance of strictly regulating its medicinal use under controlled conditions.
“The reason, I believe so, is may mga medicinal effect na da eh. That’s why they are going to legalize this. Pero if gamiton nila illegally, may mga sanctions man na da. I know if ma-legalize ang marijuana indi ka man da ka panigarilyo anytime,” he said.
Addressing the ongoing legislative process, he also urged for a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed law’s limitations and provisions.
“Let us wait for the law to be passed or approved para malantaw naton kun ano aton limitations,” he added./PN
