BACOLOD City – Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky shall remain as acting director of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) for now, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said.

The impending retirement of Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban, Negros Island Region police director, will not have any effect on Wanky’s status, Leonardia stressed.

Gumban was set to retire on May 21.

Last month he gave Leonardia a list of five candidates for full-fledged BCPO director.

Wanky was one of the candidates, the mayor previously disclosed.

Leonardia said he will consult with Gumban regarding Wanky’s status in the next few days.

“Considering the period of time we [have known each other], I would like to fortify my impression on Wanky,” the mayor said.

Leonardia said he only knew Wanky through Gumban.

In previous interviews, Leonardia stressed that he wanted Wanky to perform better, especially in the antidrug campaign.

“[Wanky’s] accomplishments [are] not bad. I just want more performance,” Leonardia previously said.

President Rodrigo Duterte tagged Negros as “No. 3” in the Philippines in terms of drug affectation, and Bacolod is the biggest local government unit in the region in terms of population, he said.

“That is why I want Wanky to seriously, effectively and efficiently improve the situation,” said the mayor.

Any improvement in the BCPO’s antidrug drive will guide him in deciding whether or not to keep Wanky as full-fledged director, Leonardia said.

Panay News cannot reach Wanky for comment as of press time.

Meanwhile Leonardia said there was an “initial and unofficial” report that five barangays have been classified drug-free. He said he was still waiting for an official report from the BCPO./PN
