ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Youth Development Council (LYDC) is appealing for volunteers for the Brigada Eskwela of the Department of Education (DepEd) for school year 2017-2018.
The city’s LYDC will participate in this year’s cleanup drive to encourage youngsters to have a productive summer, said LYDC executive director Rey Jason Gregorio.
Brigada Eskwela is a nationwide voluntary effort of teachers, parents, students, community members, and other organizations to do minor repairs and cleanups on their schools in preparation for the start of the school year.
This event began in 2003 as part of the Oplan Balik Eskwela Program and National Maintenance Week of DepEd. It encourages volunteers give out their time, effort, and even donate materials such as paint, cement, lumber and other materials, which could be used for minor repairs and building.
Donations from local corporations and businesses are given in kind.
“We enjoin the youth to participate in Brigada Eskwela because we want to help teachers and parents in cleaning the schools,” said Gregorio.
This year, Brigada Eskwela will be from May 15 to 20, but the LYDC will participate until May 19 only, said Gregorio.
Free registration of volunteers is ongoing at the LYDC office at city hall until May 12.
“Anyone can join whether you are with a group or as individuals,” Gregorio said.
Certificates of participation will be given to volunteers after the Brigada Eskwela.
The LYDC started joining the activity last year in Sambag Elementary School and Buntatala Elementary School. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
