ILOILO City – A portion of a property in Barangay Lanit, Jaro district acquired by the city government may be used for urban gardening.

“I encourage women’s groups Red Ladies and Blue Angels to make use of that land. Produce different crops that can help the community and city as well,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog during a program organized by the Local Economic and Investment Promotion Office (LEIPO) entitled “Women Make Change Happen: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs” at city hall recently.

It’s about time women are empowered to become entrepreneurs, he stressed.

“The women, instead of just staying inside the house, can maximize their free time to start a business, earn something and support their families,” said Mabilog.

The City Agriculturist’s Office will provide seedlings to start urban gardening.

The crops produced will be displayed in fairs such as Produkto Lokal initiated by the Youth First Initiative of the Philippines, said Mabilog.

“The project provides product and market development opportunities to young and emerging start-up businesses in the city especially the youth and women,” said Janvie Amido, head of Youth First Initiative Philippines-Iloilo Chapter.

Participants of the LEIPO activity included women from the business sectors, residents of relocation sites, owners of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), among others.

Successful businesswomen who gave inspirational messages included Donna Retilla who is the owner of GDR taxi; Floraiwin Cainglet, 2012 Citi Micro Entrepreneur of the Year; Glyce de Ramos, owner of Salog Spa; and Karen Gonzalez, owner of lemonade stand at SM City Iloilo.

LEIPO head Ritchel Gavan said the initiative aimed to inspire, guide and assist women involved in start-up business and community-based livelihood programs.

“We will come up with livelihood programs for women. We have to help, empower, capacitate and provide trainings for them to know how to become successful and end up being entrepreneurs,” said Gavan. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
