Wartime bomb found in construction site

ILOILO City – A bomb used in the Second World War was unearthed in a construction site in this capital city.

The undetonated explosive device measuring 140 centimeters long was found by construction workers while they were excavating in Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao district.

A backhoe operators dug up the more than 70-year-old MK65 wartime bomb at around 5 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Officers from the Police Regional Office 6’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Group (EOD/K9) safely removed the 450-kilogram cylindrical bomb buried 10 meters deep into the ground.

Senior Police Officer 4 Vengie Repedro of EOD/K9 said the bomb was the second wartime device unearthed in the same site.

“The huge bomb could cause significant damage to homes and buildings within the 200-meter radius with the fragments flying at a distance of 2,000 meters,” Repedro added. (With a report from Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
