BORACAY – A waste-to-energy plant is planned to be built in mainland Malay, Aklan to help solve the garbage problem not only in this famed island resort but also the entire province.
Councilor Floribar Bautista, chairman of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) committee on public works, said their negotiations with the Vietnam-based company El Elyon Orion Renewable Energy are being fast-tracked.
The company has been proposing the waste-to-energy plant project to the Malay local government for several years now.
“The council is now bent on giving authority to the local chief executive to enter into contracts with the said company. I hope the proceeding will be smooth,” Bautista said.
Once approved, the company will build the waste-to-energy plant in a six-hectare lot in Barangay Kabulihan.
“Under the proposed agreement, the El Elyon Orion will build and operate the plant free of charge to the local government. The counterpart of the local government, however, is the commitment of the six hectare availability,” Floribar said.
Once it operates, the plant will also be open to accept wastes from 16 other towns in Aklan.
Rossa Borres, chief executive officer of the El Elyon Orion, said Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Energy have already gave their nod for the proposed project.
“Our waste technology is of heterogeneous type. It will utilize all kinds of wastes to be converted into energy,” Borres said during a meeting with the SB./PN
