ILOILO City – As weather conditions improved yesterday morning, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Iloilo station allowed sea vessels to resume their trips.

The coastguard grounded boats on Tuesday after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) placed this city and Iloilo province under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 1.

With tropical storm “Basyang” further weakening into a low pressure yesterday, the coastguard declared all boat operations “back to normal.”

Signal No. 1 had been lifted, said PCG Iloilo chief Lieutenant Commander Rodolfo Dela Peña.

“But we reminded all sea vessels to continue being careful while traveling,” he added.

On Tuesday, boats bound for Palawan, Bacolod City, Cebu City, and Metro Manila were not allowed to leave port.

Motorboats plying the Iloilo City – Guimaras route and vice versa were allowed to continue   their operation but their passenger volume was reduced to 75 percent of their normal capacity.

In its 5 p.m. advisory yesterday, Pagasa lifted all tropical cyclone warning signals but said there was still a possibility it may redevelop into a tropical depression.

The low pressure, last spotted 220 kilometers south of Puerto Princesa City, may bring moderate to heavy rains over Palawan.

Light to moderate rains were meanwhile expected over Quezon, Bicol and Eastern Visayas due to the tail-end of a cold front.

Residents in these areas should brace for possible landslides and floods, meteorologists warned, according to Pagasa.

“Basyang” was the second storm to hit the Philippines after Tropical Storm “Agaton” devastated the southern part of the country over the New Year./PN
