STI-West Negros University Junior Mustangs moved closer to ruling the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Bacolod leg after beating Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts 95-87 in Game 1 of the finals at the formerās home court.
Aldave Canoy scored 32 points, Mark Bandojo added 15 points, while Dave Agbas and Philip MajometaƱo contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, in Junior Mustangās series-opener win on Sunday.
Trailing 65-70 at the start of the final quarter, Junior Mustangs unloaded an 8-0 run to take a 73-70 lead. The lead grew further behind baskets by Canoy and MajometaƱo to seal the win.
Junior Mustangs can clinch the title and the right to represent Bacolod in the NBTC Regional Tournament on Feb. 23 to 24 in Guimaras province if it wins Game 2 tonight at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School gym.
Junior Mustangs was up early in the match 10-5 behind Canoy and John Paul Malayas but Thunderbolts answered back courtesy of Mart Barrera and Fritz Valencia to take a 44-41 halftime lead.
Thunderbolts continued to control the game in the third behind Barrera and Ryan Cruz while limiting Junior Mustangsā Agbas and Canoy for a 70-65 lead at the end of the period.
Cruz posted 28 markers while Barrera added 21 points for Thunderbolts, which hopes to avoid another runner-up finish after losing to University of St. La Salle in the finals last year./PN
