ILOILO City – West Visayas State University in La Paz district will soon offer a dental studies program.
It was one of three state schools chosen to open such program, the other two being the University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City and the Mindanao State University in Iligan City, said Dr. Luis M. Sorolla Jr., WVSU president.
“It’s a work in progress now,” Sorolla said. “If the funds are released earlier, maybe in June (2019), we can start already. Otherwise, we can put it on hold for (the) second semester next year.”
Sorolla said he has informed Commission on Higher Education chairman Prospero E. de Vera III that the WVSU is ready to start the program right away, initially offering two dental classes and one pre-dental program.
If this materializes, the WVSU will be the first state university in Region 6 to offer a dental studies program.
Its Bachelor of Science in Biology graduates may proceed to the dental program, their course already considered a pre-dental course.
The only other government-funded school offering such program in the country is the University of the Philippines Manila.
Meanwhile, Sorolla said their plan to offer a law program is also “a work in progress.”
“There are lots of requirements, and the Legal Education Board is also very strict as of the moment,” he said. “We have complied (with) some, but there are others that need finishing touches that we are not ready to submit for evaluation.”
The WVSU might work on the additional requirements after the opening of the school year in June next year. (With Philippine News Agency/PN)
