WESTERN Visayas ended up third overall with 148 medals in the 2018 State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) National Championships in San Jose, Antique.
The delegation finished with 40 gold, 38 silver and 70 bronze medals behind overall champion National Capital Region with 165-59-45 medals and Region 3 (Central Luzon) with 83-71-84.
Region 6 claimed its fourth consecutive title in men’s football following a 6-1 demolition over Eastern Visayas behind the scoring of Roynick Bernardo, Neil Tenebroso, Arnel Christian Marcellana, and Jasper Aguado.
Also part of the John Carmona-mentored team are David Caballero, Angelo Ledesma, Vincent Ortigas, Adrian Tiongson, Jerald Paparon, Clifford Tecson, Christian Binondo, Christian Tenebroso, Jaypee Magnifico, Glen Rigor, Kenneth Rafael, Rey Oreta, Jonel Selibio, and Jasper Layagon.
Joseph Balbaguio of Ajuy, Iloilo, meanwhile, captured five gold medals in men’s arnis in individual solo, double weapon, team single weapon, team sword and dagger, and half middleweight class.
Iloilo City’s Crystal Bartonico also took home three golds in women’s arnis in individual double weapon, sword and dagger, and featherweight, and silvers in individual solo weapon, team solo weapon, team double weapon, and team sword and dagger.
The region also had a silver medal from Appolo Jan Lauresta in open weight division, and bronze medals from Stephen Suazo (light heavyweight) and Dean Marvin Ang (heavyweight).
Other gold medal winners from the region were Reynan Lojera in boxing and Omanzie Barcelona and Abishai Maprangala in taekwondo./PN
