BY MARGARET ANJELIE LLORICO, Intern

What do the youth expect from newly-elected Sangguniang Kabataan officials?

I hope they will serve as good examples to the Filipino youth. Be catalysts of change and be an inspiration to the community. God bless to the young people of this country. – RENZ PAREN, 20, student

Be the change. Be the role model of the youth. Impart to them the right way of public service. Make decisions for the good and welfare of all. Correlate your ideas with your team and always pray for the guidance of God. – ANGELICA EVE TAN, 21, fresh college graduate

SK officers should serve as role models in the community. They should serve with passion and dedication to their work. They should act more than talk and they should not be tempted by money and power. Most of all, they must serve the community with the best of their ability. – ROSILFA MALLADA, 20, student

Yours is a massive responsibility. Be a beacon of light to the youth of today. Raise the bar and be a role model. Be steadfast, stir the vibrancy of the youth by creating laudable and worthwhile initiatives. With true and enthusiastic leadership, the community will progress. – CHRIST JOHN GAMARCHA, 20, fresh graduate

The newly-elected officers should follow their declared platforms and hopefully they won’t just focus on sports activities but also solve problems in the barangay, specifically those that concern teenagers. – FRANKLIN JOVEN PASILBAS, 20, student

Another wage increase?

BY CAMILLE BRASELINO, Intern

West Visayas State University – College of Communication

Should there be another increase in the daily minimum wage?

LET’S go straight to the point. No, I don’t agree. If I were an employee, I would probably say yes to a wage increase. But I am also a taxpayer kag sa uma lang amon business, 50-50 lang man ‘ni daan.ZILLAH JOY TUBONGBANUA, 26, owner of a hardware storer, San Rafael, Iloilo

Yes, I do believe that the minimum wage should be increased. Despite the TRAIN Law which increased the take home pay of people, the prices of goods are rising and this doesn’t bode well for people with big families. The minimum wage rise may be small but it will still be a big help. – JOSE EMMANUEL ALILING, 20, Journalism graduate, West Visayas State University

No, I don’t agree. If the minimum wage is increased basi malugi akon business kay siyempre ang akon ginansya makadto na lang sa dugang pasweldo. Most of our goods are also inflating and that would affect our income and profit. If that happens, there’s a possibility that I will retrench some of my workers. – RODOLFO PAVORITO, 55, owner, water refilling station, Pototan, Iloilo

Yes na yes! Uniformed personnel have been getting a series of increases in their salaries. I think it is about time to give a raise, too, to minimum wage earners. Company owners should take care of their employees so that they will also take care of the company. It is an economic cycle and everyone must benefit. – NOEL ESPINO PARREÑO, 31, Teacher II, Jose Facultad Memorial National High School, Pototan, Iloilo

The current minimum wage is already enough for a full-time English tutor like in my case. I don’t have other expenses nor do I support someone. I find my job easy having a satisfying salary. But still, I respect other people’s opinion. I hope they would respect mine, too. – JHUDELY CASA, 23, English tutor, Iloilo City
